Overloading your curriculum vitae (CNN - Ask Annie)

A wealth of experience is an asset, but packing your curriculum vitae with too many jobs is usually a mistake.

By Anne Fisher, contributor

Dear Annie: I was pleased to read your article 8 December market slightly better work for persons over 55 years of age and my own experience confirms recently experience returns to mode with employers: after work more than a year, at the age of 57 years, I have received three interviews during the month.

My question concerns my curriculum vitae. In my career for 40 years now, I have had many different jobs who taught me a wide variety of skills, so I have all put on my resume. A friend me is distracting, so I should omit most jobs, I am busy and list only those which relate more directly to what position I am currently applied for. -Is this correct? Also, what should my resume say over short periods during which I've been between jobs or (more recently) took a "survival job" just to pay the Bills? -Sam Cincinnati

Mr Sam: friend gives you wise counsel. "A common mistake people make when their curriculum vitae is packed with too many jobs, in the hope of dazzling future employers with their wealth of experience," explains Evelyn El Salvador professional writer resume and career coach with useful book, repeats step by step: generate a unique summary in 10 easy steps is now in its second edition.

Unfortunately, this tactic rarely works. "If you include not synchronized with your target job roles, is a red flag for employers, or muddy up your curriculum vitae with too much experience, show several jobs were for short periods of time" says El Salvador. "He can lead them to consider a job hopper or a person who is not in contact with what they must play a particular role - and your resume may be eliminated."

El Salvador suggests you take a look on your current CV with advice from three following mind nine and see what changes might you need to do.

1. Eliminate jobs in short term Job for less than a year, particularly if they relate specifically to employment you are now in search of, should be cut from your resume.

"For example, say that you have worked at a place of 2000 to 2002, another in 2002 and a third party from 2003 to 2009" If this short-term employment in 2002 was left in your curriculum vitae shows a weakness, because the resume is usually written to show only years, not months, "explains El Salvador."

An exception to this rule: entry-level applicants for employment who have had courses which lasted less than a year.

2 Highlight the relevant skills or functions. People generally include non-relevant jobs on their curriculum vitae, El Salvador, notes in order to avoid a chronological gap. If this is your problem, try to activate that apparently non-related former position to your advantage by finding a connection to the job you want now.

"" There all the functions that you made in this position or skills you have acquired, which can be linked in a way any position that you are targeting? ".She asked. "Even if the relevant experience was only a small percentage of your work, you can mention this job and then describe only the relevant portions of."

At first glance, most "survival jobs" seems not related to positions you are applying for the moment, but it is often possible to dig below the surface and strike gold.

For example, suppose you had laid off to a supervisory position and worked as a waitperson at a restaurant in paying bills. It is likely that the experience you had much concerning the effective delivery of customer service and mediation disputes - two valuable skills for any Manager.

3 Not travel too far in time. You can be loaded to your curriculum vitae with too many jobs because you are including the positions that you say 30 years ago. Do not.

"If in the past 10 years, you've had enough experience to show that you are qualified for the position you are seeking now, it is unnecessary to come back later", explains El Salvador.

What happens if your relevant experience was workplan for 10 years?

It is perfect to return if you have 15 years of age, but who said El Salvador, is the limit. For a 35 years old, any hiring manager what happened when he or she was in high school have as to the age of Peter, be so suspicious you inadvertently make skills seem outdated.

"If you want to appear younger dating fewer years on your resume can help this aspect", explains El Salvador.

Similarly, job hunters who, for some reason want to appear as mature and known as possible can make listing jobs who are 15 years in the past.

In both cases, El Salvador says, "once you get your foot in the door for an interview, you can sell yourself on your qualifications and cultural"adjustment."" "Good luck!
